We would love to have you join us for an Earth Day Expo! On Tuesday, April 8th from 4-6pm in Howell Science Complex on ECU’s campus we will have interactive events for school-aged kids. Various ECU researchers and local non-profit organizations will have live animals and plants, fun science activities, natural history story times, and more! We are inviting after school programs and school clubs, as well as the public. Last year we had over 300 people participate! STEM Play Corps at Marbles Kids Museum Marbles STEM Play Corps is a group of middle school students who love science and enjoy inspiring young scientists. Participants take part in hands-on science learning with content experts, visit STEM research facilities around the Triangle and work alongside Team Marbles educators to playfully engage younger kids in science play at Marbles and in the community. Teachers and parents are you trying to provide guidance to your students and children about a career in science? Would you like a chance to “interview” ….even “interrogate” the people who are “living that life?” Then please join us for our The Research Scientist’s Toolbox –Creating, Evaluating, Presenting, Defending workshop! Date: Thursday, March 27, 2014; 6:00pm-8:00pm Minimum age 13. Minors must be accompanied by a registered adult. Location: Nature Research Center - Micro World Investigate Lab - 3rd floor Fee: $10 per participant. Preregistration is required. Fill out online, print and mail the Museum’s Registration Form with payment. The class will be a conversation between participants and the panel. There will be a few exercises, but the bulk of the class will be devoted to participants having free access to learn all they can about these exciting career paths, straight from the people who know best. Registrants will receive short bios of the scientists on the panel before the class date. Since these scientists are willingly donating their time, registrants are asked to review this material and come prepared with at least 5 questions they would like answered. Example question areas include: 1) What did you Study? Why? Was it a mistake or the right choice? False starts or wrong directions? 2) How do you decide on a research direction? 3) How do you fund your research? 4) What is the world of grants like? 5) Lab Notebooks/Recording Data – how, why, who owns it 6) Ethics: Just because you can, should you? I saw Neil DeGrasse Tyson when he was in town for this festival before, and he was excellent! Morehead's Inaugural Stemville Science Symposium is a one day science conference for 4th-7th graders that will be held on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. The conference will feature a light breakfast reception in the Rotunda, keynote address in the GSK Fulldome Theatre, and breakout science enrichment and learning sessions facilitated by undergraduate and graduate students from UNC and NCSU. The morning will be filled with local high school volunteers assisting the conference participants. The conference participants are expected to be a reflection of the underserved and underrepresented groups in STEM education with a target focus on rural and urban communities of lower socioeconomic status, Latinos, women, and African-Americans. This is a joint effort and collaboration with the UNC Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs - Latino Collaborative and Initiative and NCSU College of Arts and Sciences - Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. Girls in Science/Boys in Science Summer Camps
Get ready for a week of scientific adventure with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences's overnight summer camps. Have a middle-school student who loves science? Boys in Science Piedmont Ed-Venture, for rising 7th and 8th grade boys, is scheduled for June 23-27. Girls in Science Piedmont Ed-Venture is for rising 6th and 7th grade girls and will take place July 14-19. Both camps are based at Blue Jay Point County Park, with an overnight camping trip to Hanging Rock State Park. Applications for this selective program are due April 7. The Junior Seahawk Academy’s targets students from both economically disadvantaged and underrepresented populations to develop interests in STEM, health and education careers while participating in various fun, hands-on activities that promote learning. This program for middle school aged students who are interested in participating in unique and creative activities related to STEM, Health fields and general education. The program will be held from Monday, June 16 to Friday, June 20, 2014 from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm. You will be notified via email of the camp orientation before the camp start date of June 16th. All parents/guardians and participants are expected to attend the orientation and return required camp packets. Check this space for updates. Eligibility Criteria Applicant is of Hispanic background (one parent must be fully Hispanic or both parents must be half Hispanic). Applicant is a rising 7th, 8th or 9th grade student in Wake, Durham, Orange, Johnston, or Chatham County. The “Good Stewards of the Environment” Program, created in 2008, is the first program established by the North Carolina Society of Hispanic Professionals (NCSHP) that focuses on science. The program aligns with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in grades 6-9. The “Good Stewards of the Environment” Science Program is an extracurricular program designed to pique the interest of Hispanic students in order for them to pursue science as a career. Throughout the program students learn the process of scientific investigation through research, experimentation and discussion of the current environmental concerns for our water, soil and our atmosphere. Each year, the NCSHP will choose 30 different students to participate in the program with no cost to the student. The “Good Stewards of the Environment” Science Program is funded by a Science Enrichment Grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. This grant allows the NCSHP to expand their educational support to Hispanic students in Wake, Durham, Orange, Johnston, and Chatham counties. Students work with world leaders in the environmental field honing their leadership skills and collaborating to come up with solutions to real-world environmental issues. The Summit is open to students age 14-17 and is held at Catawba College, in beautiful Salisbury, North Carolina. This is the opportunity of a lifetime for students to explore college by working with college professors in their areas of interest, staying in LEED-certified college dormitories, and learning the skills necessary to succeed as leaders.
